Important Points to Consider
-
Cell Cast Acrylic Explained
You have probably heard about "100% Cell Cast Acrylic" and how this is the only kind of acrylic companies use. It is true that cell cast is the preferred option. But most other companies don't even know what it means. And even fewer people have actually seen an example of the "cell".
How it is made
Acrylic is made two main ways - "cell cast" and "extruded".
Cell cast involves creating a single "cell" into which the acrylic polymer is poured or injected into. The cells usually consist of very heavy glass plates set apart as wide as the finished acrylic sheet.
The entire perimeter is sealed with a flexible membrane. Once the acrylic polymer cures, the glass plates are removed and a sheet of solid acrylic remains. The flexible membrane is then trimmed off, much like the crust of a slice of bread. It is time consuming and expensive but yields the best quality sheets.
Tenecor® Solvent Welds are Forever
Unlike glass tanks that are held together with silicone, Tenecor® aquarium seams are chemically welded together. Done correctly, the bonds are impossible to break apart and will last a lifetime.
-
Acrylic thickness & tank design
One of the most important considerations in purchasing an acrylic aquarium is the thickness of the acrylic. The cost of acrylic goes up very quickly with thicker sheets and it is tempting for companies to shave costs by using thinner sheets.
Height Matters
A common question we are asked is how can two aquariums with the same capacity have such different prices. The reason is the thickness. The taller you go, the greater the water pressure. The greater the pressure, the thicker (and more expensive) the acrylic.
Tenecor® Aquariums are Made with Thicker Acrylic
Tenecor® aquariums are built with thicker highest quality brand name acrylic. We will not use thinner, less expensive imported sheets. Please keep this mind when comparing our products.
The Eurobrace
The Eurobrace refers to the front to back solid portion or portions of the aquarium top. A properly designed top with the right sized Eurobrace plays an important role in keeping the front and back panels from bowing.
The Aquarium Bottom
The aquarium bottom is also an important consideration. Many glass aquariums are placed on perimeter support stands.
Larger glass tanks often have double thickness bottoms because of the real risk of breaking them with a dropped rock or piece of coral. This is another reason why primitive glass tanks are extremely heavy.
-
Other things you need to know
Solid Top Stands
Solid top stands provide substantial structural integrity to an acrylic aquarium. Just like the Eurobrace, solid surface stands will keep the walls from bowing.
And unlike glass tanks, the likelihood of breaking the bottom is extremely low.
It's not One thing. It's Everything
If you have read this far, you probably realize that a properly designed acrylic tank has many criteria. All of them are important and all of them must be correct. Tenecor® has decades of experience in the proper design and manufacture of acrylic aquariums,
